New Building Opens in September

When the Commission of Finance moves to its new quarters at 75 Kronprindsens corner, it will be bringing under one roof a number of overcrowded offices scattered over government hill in the Administration building and nearby annexes.

"We have been requesting the new offices for four years," Commissioner of Finance Percy de Jongh said.

The move, which had been scheduled for July 1, will probably take place some time in September, according to De Jongh.

The new finance building had been a warehouse for the Department of Public Works. It is now a fully air-conditioned office building occupying almost the entire block between Main Street and the Veterans Drive parking lot, General Gade and Kronprindsens Gade. Le Petit Parisien and the Post Office annex will remain in the building.

The massive U-shaped finance building will be further enlarged to include a two-story building on the waterfront which will be shared by the lottery and the government insurance and compensation office.

De Jongh's secretary's office will be on Main Street. The commissioner's office will be off the central courtyard, to the rear of his secretary's office.

Public entrances to the building will be on General Gade, with separate approaches to the treasury and tax divisions.

There will be two vaults: one for records, the other for cash.

An archives store room will be built in the courtyard.

A portion of the building has been occupied since February: that on Kronprindsens Gade near the waterfront houses the new IBM electric data processing machines.

"In addition to moving all our offices under one roof," De Jongh said, "we have changed the accounting system from a decentralized to a centralized one."

"Previously, every branch of government did its own accounting and then turned it over to finance," he said. "Now we will do the accounting for all branches. This will mean better control and faster payments."

"Some agencies because of Federal commitments will continue to that part of their accounting that pertains to the Federal government," De Jongh said. "This includes the hospital, education and public welfare. Eventually we will take over that accounting too."

"This should mean a reduction in personnel throughout the government," De Jongh said.
