County Frowns on Paying Bill for Legislative "Tourists"

GOVERNMENTAL MERGER STUDY IS PROPOSED

The alleged touring proclivities of the legislative interim committee charged with gathering information as to whether there should be a consolidation of the government of the city of Milwaukee with the county has been meeting with discouragements, it became known, late Friday, when the state committee had a second session with an advisory committee set up by the county board.

An impression that the county government is "easy" in the matter of trips of investigation led the state group to come to the local committee with a tentative itinerary under which the two committees were to travel on together to various cities of the United States, with the county treasury standing the entire expense.

Wanted $5,000 Fund.

A definite proposal was made that the county board be asked for $5,000 to cover the costs of the proposed investigation trips, and that was about as far as it got, although a proposal to cut the amount down to $1,000 was also made.

Supervisor James P. Sheehan, Socialist, a member of the county board committee, opposed the request for funds and said the committee would do better to study out the question at home for several months or a year and that perhaps this would make it unnecessary to do any traveling whatever.

Favors Study First.

Reports and data on cities that have extended their jurisdiction to rural territory, could be had, he said, and this would supply the basis for a study of the question without leaving Milwaukee.

The state committee has an organization and Assemblyman Michael Laffey is secretary. Further meetings will be held.
