- - Skull of Guild's Play Auctioned --
LOS ANGELES, Oct. 22 (U.P.) -
The skull of "Poor Yorick" - the Shakespeare Guild "Yorick" - tonight grinned at a new kind of audience from an auction block.
The Guild's famous relic of Hamlet's historic friend, a gleaming papier mache creation, was knocked down at a mortgage sale to Mrs. Hortense Reed Harms, to satisfy a lien for $1,500 against the Guild.
It may have been a source of sardonic satisfaction to "Yorick," whose bony brow was caressed by numerous Shakespearean notables, including Robert Mantell, to know Mrs. Harms, a Shakespeare enthusiast, instituted the sale on her own claim, and bought the skull herself.
Thus "Yorick," although reduced to the ignominy of public sale, may be restored to the stage and again grace the hand of some fevered "Hamlet," who will stare at its sightless eyes and mutter—
"Poor Yorick! Alas, I knew him well."
