Ross J. Hurd, 24, city editor of the Mansfield Daily Journal and known to his intimate friends as Jimmy Hurd, was instantly killed in an automobile accident last Friday night at 9:15 o'clock on the Taylortown road east of Shelby just opposite the country residence of Jud Lindsey.
As the automobile in which he was riding swerved toward the center of the road to make a one-way bridge, it struck the abutment and was upset. Hurd's neck was broken and he died instantly.
In the automobile with him was Miss Zuleka Jennings and Warren Rusk. The latter was at the wheel and Miss Jennings and Mr. Rusk both escaped without injury.
A Mansfield automobile driven by Mrs. George Marks was following close behind the ill fated car and Hurd's body was placed in this machine and rushed to the Shelby Hospital. Hurried calls were sent to several Shelby physicians who responded quickly but they stated he was killed instantly.
