Efforts by Senator Josiah Bailey and the Wilmington Port Commission to get the Cape Fear river channel deepened from 30 to 32 feet were assured "my personal attention" yesterday by Senator Elmer Thomas, chairman of the Senate Appropriations committee.
The proposed project had previously been approved by Army engineers, but the federal Budget bureau eliminated it from the War department civil functions bill in a drastic slash in this year's fiscal budget.
In a letter to J. T. Hiers, manager of the Wilmington Port commission, Senator Bailey enclosed a communication from Senator Thomas which promises both Bailey and the commission "my personal attention to your recommendations, and if I find wherein I can be helpful I shall avail myself of the opportunity."
Senator Thomas also invited Senator Bailey to appear before the appropriations committee and submit a statement concerning the 32-foot deepening project.
