Sheep Thieves Get
Big Haul Friday
Under the protective cover of darkness, sheep thieves believed to be the same gang which has been operating in other southwestern Ohio counties, struck in Union county Thursday night.
Sheriff Walter T. Galloway said the thieves made off with 40 head of sheep from the farm of T. B. Roahen, early Friday.
Mr. Roahen, whose farm is in Liberty Township, said the theft occurred sometime between midnight Thursday and 6 a. m. Friday.
Sheriff Galloway likened the activities of the sheep thieves to the old-time rustlers in the Wild West. "They just drive up and make off with a whole truck-load at once," he declared.
Two weeks ago, he added, the sheep rustlers took a load of sheep from Delaware county, and prior to that, made off with more than 70 head near Piqua.
The "phantom" thieves first struck in Union County a year ago, when they took a large number of sheep from the farm of J. E. Hoover, also in Liberty township. Since then, the Sheriff said, there have been several other thefts in other counties, and from the method of operation, the sheriff believes it is all part of the same gang.
"Where and when they will strike again, I don't know," Sheriff Galloway declared. "But we are doing everything we can to track them down and hope to be in a better position the next time they come this way."
