October 8. Henry Simmons, the Jew, (who swore that Mr. Goddard, the Inn-keeper, at Cranford Bridge near Hounslow, robbed him of 554 Ducats, for which Mr. Goddard was tried last Sessions at the Old Bailey, and honourably acquitted, and the said Simmons was indicted for Perjury;) was, on Sunday last, met on the Road to Harwich by Mr. Ashley of this City, Brandy-Merchant, who knew him, and that he stood indicted, and that a Warrant was issued out by Mr. Alderman Gascoyne, for the said Crime, and that such Warrant was in the Hands of Mr. Ford's Deputy-Clerk of the Peace of London; Mr. Ashley instantly came Post for London, got the Warrant from Mr. Ford, and returned with the utmost Expedition, and took him some Miles short of Harwich, where he intended to take Shipping for Holland; and putting him into the Possession of a Constable, he was carried to Chelmsford, in order to be examined before the Bench of Justices who were then sitting; and whilst waiting for a Hearing, Simmons contrived to put into the Coat Pocket of Mr. Ashley Ducats, and then earnestly pressed to be heard by the Justices; before whom he declared, and desired to make Oath, that Mr. Ashley was the Person, who with the said Mr. Goddard, had robbed him of the 554 Ducats; and, as Confirmation thereof, he was sure that Mr. Ashley had Part of the said Ducats in his Right-Hand Coat Pocket; but it clearly appearing that the Jew put them in himself, he was sent to London Hand-cuff'd, with a proper Guard, and carried Yesterday before Justice Fielding, who committed him to New-Prison, in order to take his Trial next Sessions at the Old-Bailey, for the said Perjury.
