Full Text

Three centuries ago Szegedin, then one of the largest Hungarian towns, was completely destroyed by fire. To the bitterly lamenting people, an old woman prophesied that the town would never be again what it was, "until the dead should come back once more into her streets." This became a common saying, and was accepted by the people as meaning that Szegedin would not regain her olden greatness. Some weeks ago, when the town was destroyed by flood, the water burst open the vaults and graves, and many of the dead floated about the streets in their wooden coffins. The Magyars, who are as superstitious as are all people with Eastern blood in their veins, now firmly believe that this is an omen, and that Szegedin will be a wonderful city again.
