To the Editors of the Oracle.

Unwilling to lengthen out the petty controversy which you have seen fit to institute with us, our remarks in reply to your lengthy columns will be as concise as possible; we would not be understood to censure their prolixity knowing that a lame cause needs much to be said in its support.

In regard to your application to us for our list of votes for Governor, we have nothing to add to what has been already said, which we aver to be substantially true, any thing in your paper to the contrary notwithstanding.

Part of those towns which you charge us with omitting were not published by us for reasons already given. The towns of Gilmantown and Sanbornton because their proceedings have been said to be illegal, and the remainder because the information did not reach us in season for our last paper.

We are happy to hear of your endeavors "to rear around you a wall of truth," (to use your own expression) it would indeed be a very safe and sure defence; but we are sorry you have been so unsuccessful in your first attempts, we fear you have not sufficiently attended to the foundation,—at present it appears to us rather like a veil than a wall, and of too thin a texture to conceal the cloven foot that lurks behind,—we would recommend circumspection, and as soon as you get right, the most unremitting perseverance in the noble cause.

"Firmly in federal paths we still shall tread,

Nor heed the wasps that buzz around our head!!!"

This couplet borrowed from the motto of your pious archetype, the editor of the Centinel, we think applied with equal ill-grace by him and you,—we cheerfully submit to the public to decide which of the two may with most propriety, be said to tread in federal paths; the man who is employed in the support of the federal government, and those appointed by the people to administer it, or he who acting under British or Aristocratic influence is endeavoring by the grossest misrepresentation and falsehood to spread sedition through the land, to disaffect the people to the Government, and to bring every public and private character who is endeavoring to support it into hatred and contempt!

"The buzzing wasps" is an appellation which we understand to belong to the lesser tools of Aristocratic influence who are employed in the more subordinate sphere of disturbing those who are peaceably advocating the Republican cause, in opposition to its enemies; rather than to those who are occasionally compelled with reluctance to resist their attacks.

In all our controversies hitherto you have been the aggressors; we do not accuse you of injuring us, although the disposition does not appear to have been wanting. As we are travelling different roads, it does not seem necessary that we should fall out by the way; we envy you no part of the happiness you can derive from the course you have taken, believing it will end in disappointment and chagrin,—extend the same feelings to us, (and the same opinion if you please) and all bickerings will cease. If no other consideration will prevail, let pity to your readers and ours induce you to postpone any further gratification of your capricious humour (if such you possess) until some subject of greater importance shall present itself to justify the attempt.
