Full Text

Extract of a Letter from Berlin, July 20.

"The last Instructions which the King has sent to Mr. Pollman, his Minister at Ratisbon, about the Affair of East Friesland, tally exactly with the Memorial which that Minister lately presented to the Dyet. His Majesty, accustomed to maintain his Rights, is firmly resolved to relinquish none of the Titles by Virtue of which he has been acknowledged as Lord and Possessor of East Friesland. His Minister at Ratisbon has Order to contradict the Imputations contained in the Writings of the Hanoverian Ministry, and to shew the States of the Empire, that it is with great Injustice that they endeavour in the said Writings to render his Principal suspicious, since it is impossible to have any better calculated for the Good of the Empire than those which he makes Profession of; seeking only to give to Caesar the Things that are Caesar's, aiming at nothing but to maintain the Imperial Authority, but at the same Time unwilling to expose himself to the Reproach of suffering a System to be introduced in the Empire, according to which the Sentence of such a Court as the Aulic Council would have more Force and Weight than the Resolutions of the Empire and the Decrees of the Emperors, which so positively established his Right of Possession; and being moreover persuaded, that the Electors and Princes of the Empire will consider how important it is, that such of them as may sacrifice their Dominions and their Troops for the Service of the Emperor and the Empire, should be indemnised with something better than bare Promises, &c."
