April 23. The following intelligence is extracted from a private letter received by yesterday's French mail. It is dated Warsaw March 15th. "If we are to credit the last accounts from Petersburg, it appears that the empire is threatened with incursions from the wandering Tartars, who never were reconciled to the subduing Little Tartary, whose inhabitants they look upon as brethren. The Usbeck Tartars have affected an alliance with the Turcomani, who live near Mounts Taurus and Caucasus. They consulted together which parts they should invade, and it is said that they are come to a resolution of beginning their hostilities by an irruption into the fertile country watered by the river Volga, after having laid waste that of Georgia, whose princes they hold in the utmost abhorrence and contempt, for having put themselves under the protection of the Russians.

The sultan of Samarcand has sent emissaries into Bucharia, for the purpose of persuading the inhabitants to invade the northern parts of the empire, whilst the above Sovereign, at the head of 300,000 men, will proceed, towards the Caspian Sea. These accounts, whether doubtful, or at least exaggerated, have occasioned a private council to be called, when it was resolved to march towards that part of the empire, the troops who were ordered for Europe."
