DISCOVERY OF FALSE CONTRACTS IN THE SOUTH
WESTERN SERVICE.
WASHINGTON, April 6.-Conclusive proof has
been obtained this afternoon that four or five
clerks in the post-office Department and several
persons outside
have secured
a number
of contracts
for mail
service
in the
Southwestern
States
by means
of a
counterfeit
of the
stamp contain-
ing the initials of the First and Second Post-
masters General, which is placed on bids
when opened, in order to show that they have
been received in time. This counterfeit stamp
has been used to give apparent validity to sham
bids made at lower figures than the lowest of
the bids opened at the advertised time. Among
the contractors implicated is Hynes, recently
appointed United States marshal for Alabama.
The contracts thus secured will be annulled, and
all the clerks implicated will be immediately dis-
missed.
