Marseilles, May 17. According to the last letters received from Acre, which are dated the 15th of March, Ali Bey was at that time still at Joppa, which he was fortifying. He waited the decrease of the Nile to re-enter Egypt, the governor of which kingdom being informed of his designs, is making the necessary dispositions to oppose him. He has also prohibited the exportation of corn, rice, and all sorts of provisions, out of Egypt into Syria: and the second interpreter of the French nation has received orders to go to Damietta to watch over the conduct of our captains who may act in contravention to these orders. Notwithstanding the apparent security of the Caimacan, they are under apprehensions in Egypt that Ali Bey may easily penetrate, if he should attempt to enter it.
