Sectional Appeals,
When the Dispatch quotes the language used by Sherman and Foraker in their speeches in Ohio and New York, the Mahoneites have the impudence to charge us with making sectional appeals. Every reader of the Dispatch knows that we have made no sectional appeals. We have never said a word against the northern people. We have only to say that we have quoted from Sherman's and Foraker's speeches in Ohio, as these appear in a supplement to the Cincinnati Commercial-Gazette, which supplement was printed by the hundreds of thousands by the Republican Committee and circulated all over Ohio. Fortunately, Hon. James H. Skinner, of Augusta, had the forethought to send to Ohio nearly two months ago and procure copies of that supplement, He kindly sent one copy to us, which we have lying by us at this moment. He also sent copies to Harrisonburg, where Judge Foraker would have had to face them on Tuesday last if he had not refused to engage in a joint discussion with Judge Harris.Mr. Skinner no doubt sent to other places. He, therefore, has the gratitude of the Democrats of Virginia for having put it in their power to expose Foraker's and Sherman's double-dealing and hypocrisy.
The speech of Sherman at Mount Gilead would occupy more than a whole page of the Dispatch, and that of Foraker at Portsmouth would occupy about two solid pages. Both speeches were taken down by short hand writers and both, we repeat, were circulated as campaign documents, and made no doubt many a vote for Foraker. Now, Foraker has the effrontery to declare to his Virginia audiences that he has never waved the bloody shirt except to declare for fair elections everywhere, North and South.
That is a downright falsehood. No Virginian would object to a declaration on the part of any man in favor of fair elections everywhere. What we object to, as Foraker well knows, is that he charged the southern Democrats with fraud, murder, and assassination. Here are his own words as they were circulated all over Ohio in the Commercial-Gazette supplement above referred to. We quote them once more
"But these colored Republicans we allowed so to vote. On the contrary fraud, by violence. by murder by assassination, by bull-whips and shot-guns, white leaguers and ku klux klans, by agencies of the most unscrupulous and diabolical character, by horrible barbarities such as were practiced at Coushatta and Hamburg, in the murder of the Chishelms, in the massacre at Danville, and in the assassination of Print Matthews in Copiah county, Miss., a system of terror was inaugurated and practiced for the last ten years preceding the election, by reason of which at the last election the colored Republicans of the South were wholly deprived of all practical benifit of their right of suffrage, and the forty votes which ought to have represented them and have been cast in the electoral college 'as Republican votes were wrested from them, not only in violation of their right but in violation of the right of every voter in the United States, and cast as Democratic votes, whereby to elect a Democratic President and install a Democratic Administration."
If the making of that speech was not the waving of the bloody shirt, then nobody has ever waved the bloody shirt in Ohio or in any other State. We will not attempt to comment upon that language. It carries its own comments with it, and proves beyond a doubt that Mr. Foraker cannot be trusted to tell the whole truth upon the stump. He reserves the right to define what the words "waving the bloody shirt" means.-Richmond Dispatch.
