DISTRESSING ACCIDENT.

As the mayor of this city, James Calhoun,
Esq. was yesterday forenoon coming from the
country to divine service, his gig, in turning
the corner of a fence near Mr. Gibson's, was
unfortunately upset, and himself and one of
his grand children, who was sitting on his lap,
were both thrown out. Mr. Calhoun, in his
exertions to save the child, had his right ankle
bone so much fractured, as to render an ampu-
tation necessary. The operation was per-
formed by Doctors Brown and Littlejohn with
great skill; and this morning their patient was
in as favourable a way as could be expected.
The child we are happy to learn, received
not the least injury.
