Executive Director Of Maryland Public Expenditure Council Addresses Lions Club Meeting
John L. Hougardy, executive director of the Maryland Public Expenditure Council, told members of the Lions club and their guests on Monday night that the condition of bureaucratic government could be traced to the citizens themselves, who for too many years hadn't bothered about government.
The meeting was held at the Fike Boarding house on High street, with about fifty members and guests present.
Mr. Hougardy outlined the purpose of the organization he represented and urged those present to take an active interest in the affairs of government, to combat the lobbyists and pressure groups that were on every hand in Washington, clamoring for handouts.
He declared the post-war problems could be solved by business men everywhere if they took the time to be interested in government.
He pointed out the extent to which the Federal debt was going as positive proof that all unnecessary spending by federal agencies must be eliminated, if this government is to stave off chaos.
He urged those present as citizens to take an interest in proposed legislation and to keep contact with those who represent the people in Congress.
He discussed briefly in this respect the proposed Wagner-Murray bill, a social security bill of much wider coverage than the one now in effect.
