A small sloop with Mr. Finch and family of Norfolk on board, bound into Piankatank, anchored in Horn Harbor upon seeing the English fleet. An enemy barge boarded the sloop to take her out, but 32 militia under captain Thomas reached the beach. The enemy officer threatened to burn the sloop if fired on, but captain Thomas refused compromise and ordered men in a canoe to engage. The enemy cut the cable and drifted out but retreated to their barge upon seeing the approach. Firing ensued from both sides, with militia wading into water to continue.
