On Wednesday morning the 12th inst. a small sloop, with Mr. Finch and family, of Norfolk, on board, was bound into Piankatank; but, seeing the English fleet off that river, run into Horn Harbor and came to anchor. A barge was sent by the enemy, which succeeded in boarding the sloop, with the intention of taking her out: but the militia, 32 in number, under captain Thomas, having soon reached the beach, the officer of the barge threatened to burn the sloop and all on board if they were fired on, and proposed to Mr. Finch to go on shore and make terms; but capt. Thomas refused to accept a compromise, and ordered as many men into the canoe Mr. Finch came on shore in, as she would hold, and row round the sloop, calling at the same time to the females and others of the family to go below, that their being exposed might not prevent their firing on the bargemen. The sloop's cable had been cut, and she was drifting out, with the barge under her lee; but finding the canoe would soon get round her and engage him under the lee of the vessel, and expose him to the fire of the party on shore, they took to their barge and rowed off. The firing commenced on both sides, and the militia went up to their waists in water and continued firing as long as there was a prospect of doing them any injury. Five of the enemy were seen to fall. On our part, a Mr. White received a wound from a ball in his thigh.
