New York Evening Post makes the following
comments on the military character of Gen. Wm
F. Smith, and on his strategic operations near
Chattanooga:
"We speak not only of Thomas, Hooker, and
other fighting men—men who in the day of battle may be reckoned to give a good account of
the enemy; but for the preliminary operations
and for the formation of an offensive plan, Gen.
Grant, himself famous as a strategist, has the help of such a man as Gen. W. F. Smith, known in
army circles as one of the ablest and keenest
sighted strategists in the country. To Gen.
Smith's genius the country owes the brilliant
movement by which Lookout Valley was taken
from the rebels, and with it—on their own confession—all they had gained by the battle of
Chickamauga. The plan of Gen. Smith was so
entirely successful that it scarcely received the
praise, in the North, which it deserved. It was
in its conception one of the most brilliant and
skilful, and in its success one of the most important operations of the war."
