What is this article about?

Informational piece on fish vision: they see well in clear water like land animals out of it, have side-facing eyes for opposite views, not naturally attracted to colors unless trained, so bait color matters little in natural settings.

Hunting and Fishing Brevities
By Carl Fraction

Almost everyone at one time or another has wondered about the vision of fish and if they are color blind or not.

This subject is always a good topic for a discussion among fishermen.

Taking all things into consideration, fish are able to see in clear water nearly as well as land creatures see out of water and they have just as much difficulty seeing out of water as land creatures do when under water.

It is possible for fish to see in their surrounding medium because of the construction of their eyes which are adapted for underwater vision, however, fish see poor perspectively and because of the location of their eyes on either side of their head are able to see in opposite directions at the same time but not directly ahead.

Most authorities agree that fish are not stimulated or attracted by any particular color unless they are taught to do so. Fish in experimental laboratories have been taught to respond to certain colors and repel others.

As for fishing, it makes little difference what color the bait, the angler uses in lakes and streams because these fish have not been taught to distinguish the difference between colors.
