LET US HAVE A UNION DEPOT.
It seems that in the construction of the freight depots of the two railroads, passing through the corporate limits of this city, there has been a disregard of the railroad law of the State for the last two years. This law requires that a union depot shall be established at the intersection of the Texas and Pacific and the Texas Central. Of course any parties having freight to ship by either road can demand that it be received at that point. Either Company refusing to receive it there, renders itself liable to damages.
The following is the law on the subject:
"Sect. 12. The point at which the roads of two companies intersect, or connect, is declared to be a depot for the receipt and delivery of freight, and the companies must receive and deliver freight and passengers to and from the same, under the same regulations and the same penalties as in other cases. Approved April 10, 1858."
There can be no question that the public convenience requires that there shall be a union depot at the crossing of the two roads, and our citizens ought to see to it that the law is enforced. Instead, therefore, of having a second depot in the heart of the town, let us have a union depot, and relieve our thoroughfares as much as possible from the obstruction caused by the frequent passing of freight trains.
The law is a good one—its enforcement would add greatly to the convenience of the public, and we trust that our people will see to it that it is complied with. It is well known that one of the chief obstacles to the erection of a grain elevator, so much required by the interests of our city, is in the non-existence of such a depot at the crossing.
