SPARTA, (Geo.) February 26.

Hancock Superior Court, Feb. term, 1808.

Present, his Honor Judge Tait.

On the first of the present term, immediately after the court was organized, the Foreman of the grand jury presented the following petition, to wit:

Feb. the 15th, 1808.

To the Hon. Charles Tait, Judge of the Superior Court, now sitting for the county of Hancock.

The grand jury for the county aforesaid, taking into view the embarrassing situation of our country, from the effect which the embargo laid by the general Government, has on Commerce, and the incalculable injury which will thereby inevitably result to the good citizens of this state and country, if courts of justice continue open; unanimously recommended that the court proceedings at the present term be suspended until Legislative interference can be obtained.

CHARLES ABERCROMBIE, Foreman.

The court took time to consider the request of the Grand Jury and finally came to the conclusion, that as much distress would ensue, if judgment were now rendered, on account of the Embargo imposed by the general Government, and the consequent fall of the price of the productions of the country.

But being conscious, that it is not competent for the court to render all the relief necessary—this being in the power of the legislature alone, and the court being desirous to meet the wishes of the Grand Jury, as far as in the regular exercise of its judicial functions it can do—thinks proper to adjourn over all further proceedings until the third Monday in May next.

The Court took up the proceedings of the Grand Jury—and thereupon Ordered, That a certified copy thereof be transmitted to the Executive of this state, and that the whole be published in the Farmer's Gazette,

The court then adjourned until the third Monday in May next.

A. MARTIN, Clerk.
