Full Text
Returns from some fifty or sixty towns indicated a heavy poll and very close vote. The chances are decidedly in favor of Governor Cleveland. The Legislature will be largely Democratic. George S. Catlin, Democrat, is elected by a large majority from the Third District—New London and Windham. The Democrats also claim the election of Thomas H. Seymour in the First District, consisting of Hartford and Tolland counties. The vote is close in the New Haven District—the Whig candidate, Samuel D. Hubbard, is supposed to be chosen. In the Fourth District: the run is very close between Hon. B. Osborne, late Whig member, and S. Simmons, Dem.
Later—Returns from all the towns of the State but 15, give Governor Cleveland a plurality over Mr. Baldwin of over 1500. His election depends upon the scattering votes, which are not all reported. So far they amount to about 900, and it is doubted whether a choice has been made by the People. The Legislature, however, being largely Democratic, will soon settle the question, in the event of no choice being made by the People. It is certain that the Democratic candidates for Congress are chosen in all the Districts except Fairfield and Litchfield, where there is some doubt. It is a pretty clean triumph for the Democrats.—New World
