[COMMUNICATED.]

The article by 'Vindex,' in a recent number of the Alexandria Gazette, touches the very nerve centre of the Southern situation, for that article is 'loaded to the gunwales' with homely truths. The politicians may prate about a 'solid South,' and indulge in 'blarney blaw' for political preferment, and to accomplish their own selfish ends at the expense of the material prosperity of the poor, down-trodden and struggling masses, but the remedy lies only in the direction indicated by 'Vindex.' The South must act more in consonance with her material prosperity—look to the development of her inexhaustible mineral resources, take the cash that is squandered in electioneering processes and hurrah nonsense and invest in the manufacture of such articles as are needed for Southern consumption, eschewing politics for the nonce, before she can expect to attain to that condition of prosperity and happiness so devoutly wished by her sons. Who will strike the first lick for home enterprise and set the wheels to whirling upon Virginia streams? Why should we always buy buttons from Waterbury?
