Chicago, Sept. 24. (AP)—Charles M. Schwab, by his own word, a steel man of the old school, pays his tribute to the steel men who work with laboratory instruments ridiculously out of proportion with the blast furnaces and giant roller mills which the Chairman of Bethlehem Steel knows better.
"I sometimes doubt the effect of chemistry upon steel making," he confessed to the annual banquet of the American Society for Steel Treating.
"But my eyes were opened to the necessity of those things, and today I see chemistry as one of the great assets not only to our company but to our Nation."
He appeared before the society to accept an honorary membership.
The honor was bestowed on Herbert H. Gary who, however, was unable to attend in person.
