Col. Sawyer forwarded the colors of the gallant 8th Ohio to Gov. Brough and received the following reply:
State of Ohio. Executive Dept.
Columbus, August 3, 1864.
Lieut. Col. Franklin Sawyer, 8th Reg't O.
Norwalk, Ohio:
Sir:-Your letter of the 23d July came duly to hand, and the colors were delivered during my absence on Saturday last. I have deposited them, with similar trophies in the proper Department.
The record of the 8th Regiment is among the most brilliant of those made during the war. It reflects honor alike upon the men who have written it with their blood and their lives, and the State they have so well represented and defended. Upon every field they have fought, and every contest in which they have been engaged, the officers and men of this command have displayed earnest zeal, courage and patriotic fidelity to the country. They merit as they will receive, the thanks and gratitude of our people. God grant that their noble services and sacrifices have not been in vain-and that we may early rejoice in a re-established government and a united country.
