In the details of important news from Europe, we perceive that 160,000 Prussians were in Paris. These seem to be more barbarous and savage than the Russians themselves--or even the ancient Goths. They had destroyed the bridge of Austerlitz, the groves of the Luxembourg, and (what is far more injurious and irreparable) laid waste the grand botanic garden with all its plants, which was attached to the National University and Institute.--They had levied one contribution of fifty millions of francs, and demanded another of thirty millions in three days. In no part of Bonaparte's conquests, was there displayed any such savagery as this. These outrages had excited their fears of an enraged populace; cannon had been placed at the avenues and bridges, and artillerists were constantly stationed, with lighted matches, by the guns.
