The Vote of Lewis County—The Reported Radical Gain.
Weston, W. Va., Nov. 17, 1870
Editors of the Register:

In noticing the result of the late election in this county, you concede a Radical gain, which is an error, and one no doubt you have unintentionally fallen into. In 1866 this county gave 14 Democratic majority for the State ticket, and in 1868 it gave 143 Democratic majority, and in 1870 it gave 146 Democratic majority. This being Camden's former home, he received from personal consideration several Radical votes, which run him ahead of his ticket, but the majority for Walker and the State ticket, with the exception of Camden, was 143.

This fall these and the 60 Democratic votes lost by the action of the registrars, we gave 146 majority, making a gain (instead of a loss) of 3 over the vote of 1868. It is true we had considerable disaffection on our county ticket which is to be very much deplored, yet we know of no Democrat who failed to vote the entire Democratic State ticket. We have over 400 disfranchised voters in this county, to which add the 60 that were left off of the registry books this fall, and you will at once see that the Democratic party has had a great deal to contend with in this county and it was no easy task to make the majority as high as we did. Again, you will see from the heavy gains we made in 1868 over the vote of 1866, that we registered in 1868 a considerable number and since then we have not been able to put but very few if any on, excepting young men coming of age and, in many instances, we have not been able to put all of them on.

Main Argument

the register erred in reporting a radical gain in lewis county; actually, democrats gained 3 votes over 1868's majority due to strong state ticket support despite disfranchisement and registry issues.
