Last week the British crowned a new king, the titular ruler of 500,000,000 people and the sovereign of about one-fourth of the land surface of the globe.
Americans find it hard to understand the trappings of royalty that bedeck a democratic country, which leads the United States in application of social security laws and even now prepares to take over the coal mines of the nation as a governmental enterprise.
While His Majesty, George VI, rules the British Empire in theory he does so, in fact, according to the advice tendered him by countless representatives of the people.
Thus the King speaks the popular mind as interpreted by the elected spokesmen of his people in many parts of his realm and, in other areas, acts through administrators trying to introduce representative institutions.
What happens when the King does not follow the advice of elected officials explains why it is now King George and not King Edward!
