We have the satisfaction to state to our readers that through the unceasing vigilance of Mr. Thomas Ross of this city, the robbers were detected last evening and committed to gaol. One of them is named PERRY HUTTON, formerly employed and well known in this city as driver of the mail and public stages. He had lately broke gaol at Richmond, where he had been convicted of kidnapping. This circumstance being known to Mr. Ross, he arrested him and his companion, a Dr. Hull, and on examining their persons at the gaol nearly six thousand dollars were found on Hull and about two hundred dollars on Hutton, all in bank and post notes. The latter, on being accused with the murder of the driver, betrayed evident signs of guilt.
Mr. Ross found on them two keys similar to each other, with which he proceeded to their boarding house, and in a trunk used by both he found about ten thousand five hundred dollars in various bank and post notes.
The whole amount of money recovered is about $16,500, a considerable part of which is half-notes.
Hutton and Hall were examined yesterday morning at the gaol, before the Judges of the District and City Courts, the Post Master, and a number of respectable citizens. Nothing however, has fallen from them as to the murder, each preserving a determined silence when any question of consequence was asked.
Several other persons have been taken up on suspicion, but the crime thus far, appears to be confined to the two above mentioned.
Hutton acknowledges his acquaintance with the murdered driver. Neither of the two slept at home Friday night.
