Extract of a letter from Washington, to the editor of the Maryland Republican, dated May 7.
"There seems, for the present, a suspension of government movements respecting the Naval Depot in the upper Chesapeake or at St. Mary's, &c. although we hear of an assemblage of engineers lately in the City of Washington, who are likely soon to embark from Baltimore per the steam boat, down the bay: among them the celebrated Gen. Bernard, (who constructed the Antwerp works and has recently returned from his survey of the Mississippi below Orleans,) with his assistant Poussin; general Swift, colonel Armistead, the topographical engineer, Roberdeau, Kearney and Anderson, and sundry others. Reports state that the President, after first visiting his Loudoun estate, is to proceed to and meet the party at Hampton or Norfolk, on or about the 20th inst. for the survey of the lower bay, &c. but declining for the present summer his intended visit to the southern frontier."
