Bethesda, House of Mercy, was a beautiful name for the pool with its marvellous power to heal. A House of Mercy is the Church of God in the midst of a world of evil and sorrow. No institution has ever existed in the world so beneficent as the Church, which brings the truth and grace of God unto men. Philanthropy of every kind, education, charity, healing, protection for the weak, peace for the troubled, hope for the sorrowful, blessings that go to the heart, and that last to eternity, make the Church of God the Bethesda of this sin-cursed world.
WHAT a House of Mercy to a community may a Church of Christ become! Ministering indeed to temporal want and suffering, and, so exemplifying the better grace of the gospel; lifting up men and families by the temporal effects of the new spiritual life; and far beyond, bringing divine grace into the souls of many, that they become new creatures in Christ, and rise up into a new manhood and an eternal life.
