Clayton Quits
State Department

WASHINGTON, (AP) - William L. Clayton quit today as undersecretary of state for economic affairs but agreed to stand by as an unpaid adviser to the secretary of state.

His wife's health was given by Clayton as the reason for his resignation, effective at the close of business today.

President Truman, accepting the resignation with reluctance, expressed "great satisfaction" over Clayton's assurance of his willingness to return to public service if Mrs. Clayton's health improves sufficiently to permit him to do so.

Clayton wrote Mr. Truman on July 7:

"For at least three or four years Mrs. Clayton has been very anxious, for reasons of health, to return to our home in Houston.

"Endeavoring to meet her wishes, I have on several occasions, starting as far back as four years ago, tendered my resignation."

Mr. Truman told Clayton that his letter left him "no alternative but to acquiesce."
