FOREST FIRE SWEEPS WIDE MINNESOTA AREA

Many Homeless as Flames Destroy Minnesota Village.—Fire Thought Checked

McGrath, Minn.—More than 70 refugees from the fire-swept area in the vicinity of Solana and White Pine, including those who at noon Tuesday were made homeless when the village of White Pine was wiped out, are being cared for by the national guard contingent stationed at this place.

Settlers and villagers were forced to flee for safety when underbrush grass and timber fires again broke through fire lines established by the state troops and forest rangers detailed here to prevent a further spread of the forest menace.

Approximately 200 state troops in addition to a large number of settlers and citizens of the various communities in the fire zone, backfired the underbrush and built firebreaks to help check the fire which broke through the lines a little before noon Tuesday, and caused the evacuation of Solana and Arthyde, a village about 14 miles from here, and numbering about 12 families.

The fire was checked late Tuesday night when again the wind died down and gave the fire fighters an opportunity to lay another fire break, which it is hoped will check the fire and confine it within its burned area.
