Constantinople, March 20.

The janissaries have given a new proof of their seditious dispositions and the cruelty that is their characteristic. The tranquility of this capital has been disturbed for some days by the conduct of that soldiery. The consequences might have been dangerous if the government had not stifled the mischief by its vigilance and moderation. A long time irritated by the excessive severity of their chief (aga,) and above all by the execution of three officers of the 50th ortah, and by the condemnation of two others of the same company, the janissaries resolved to set these latter at liberty, at the moment when they should be condemned to execution. They were resolved also to set at liberty several of their comrades who were shut up in dungeons, and to put the aga to death. The rising took place on the 14th of this month. They took the aga from his mansion, carried him to the barracks, and, after loading him with outrages, cut him into little bits. The grand vizier being apprized of these acts of barbarity, immediately repaired to the palace of the grand seignior, and thence to the artillery barracks, and to the armorers to secure these two corps. A fire which broke out in the night, augmented the terror and disorder: the grand vizier hastened to the place to direct the means of stopping the conflagration. Happily, the flames made but little progress, only four houses being burned, and these in a deserted quarter.

In the room of the assassinated aga, the rebels chose for their chief Kul Kyagassi, next in command of the janissaries, after the aga. That officer refused to accept the command, but they forced it upon him. The following day passed in negociations between the grand vizier and the new aga. Towards the evening the grand seignior consented to recognize the aga; and invited him to the palace to be installed in his functions. Thus terminated this insurrection. On the third day, the shops were open as usual. On the 17th the grand seignior went to the mosque cidage, situated near the docks, to say his prayers. His highness appeared gay: and the people received him with lively acclamations as he passed along.
