Full Text
The great and good General Stonewall Jackson has died upon the field of glory! The Christian, the soldier, the patriot thus fought his last fight, and "after life's fitful fever, sleeps well."
With what pangs of inexpressible sorrow do we trace these words; how bitterly has the hand of bereavement fallen upon the hearts of a suffering people.
The brightest of the Southern Confederacy bleeds with a wound that glory cannot quell. Our very triumph itself weeps over the grave of Jackson.
Words are empty to paint the nation's grief; words are empty to frame her hero's eulogy. His own achievements within short twelvemonth past make his proudest man loom.
A year ago the eighth of the present year. Gen. Jackson inflicted the first stunning blow upon the abolition army in the valley of Virginia; following up a bold, he dealt the second to Richmond." and placed himself in a position to so operate (how brilliantly and effectively, we all well remember!) in the overthrow of the third under McClellan, the fourth under Pope, the fifth under Burnside, and the sixth under Hooker.
But noble, brave, true and good, he now, sleeps beneath the sod of his loved Virginia..
Let his sad tomb upon History's every page, an epitaph upon every Patriot's tongue.
