Charlottesville, Virginia—Thurgood Marshall, Staff Counsel of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, will address the local branch of that organization Tuesday evening, March 30, it was announced by Eugene Williams, chairman of the branch's Membership Committee at the group's meeting last week.
Marshall's address will climax the ceremony of crowning the lucky contestant "Miss NAACP" in the organization's current drive for 500 additional members.
As ordered by a vote of the Charlottesville Branch, admission to the ceremonies, including Marshall's appearance on the program, will be by membership card only. Persons not already members on the night of the program, may join the branch as they appear at the door where a staff of efficient secretaries will be stationed to write up memberships, and paying the proper membership fees.
As required by the National NAACP, annual membership fees are as follows: For youth councils and students—youths under 17 years of age, 50c; 17 to 21, $1.00, and 21 to 25, $2.00. Regular minimum membership fees for adults, $2.00 annually.
A news Letter is being circulated by the local branch monthly in an attempt to keep the membership well informed as to its activities. In an appeal for increased membership, C. D. Fowler, Jr., president of the branch, writes, "The NAACP is for you. Your support and participation is its power. Its officers and executive board are your choice. You decide its program by ballot. Our branch is a local organization made up and financed by people of Charlottesville who realize that the rights of all people must be protected and defended if democracy is to work."
"Every Negro should be a "Card Carrying Member" of the NAACP. This represents strength. It signifies collective action on mutual problems. It means better education, better jobs, better community relations and the first step toward removal of all economic, social, political and civic barriers. We approach our problems by peaceable means; by conference, by negotiating, by logical appeal, and finally by the courts. We despise violence, dictatorship, and communism and any other "ism" that oppresses human rights. You do yourself justice and
