All Three Measures On General Ballot Are Defeated Tuesday
Two state constitutional amendments and one initiative have been defeated, partial returns from over the state indicate. The three measures appeared on the general election ballot.
The proposed amendment for change in distribution of school money received 37,824 votes favoring the measure and 57,033 against it.
Another proposed constitutional amendment provided for change in length of terms of some public offices. For it were 48,534, and against it 62,121.
In addition to giving Franklin D. Roosevelt its four electoral votes for his fourth term as Democratic president, Montana re-elected its Republican Governor Sam C. Ford and returned Democratic Representative James F. O'Connor to congress.
Most pre-election interest was aroused in the initiative concerning the practice of osteopathic physicians. About half of the state's precincts reported 50,012 votes for the measure and 76,316 against it.
GOVERNOR FORD
Republican Governor Sam C. Ford and returned Democratic Representative James F. O'Connor to congress. O'Connor is from the second district, and in the first district (western Montana), Representative Mike Mansfield, Democrat, was a walkaway winner.
Unofficial returns from most of the state's 1,175 precincts gives President Roosevelt 106,325 and Dewey 83,367, Governor Ford 109,232 and Erickson, Democratic candidate for governor, 83,430.
Two contests are yet to be settled, those of Matthews and Cheadle for associate justice of the supreme court, and Casey, Democrat, and Davis, Republican, for railroad and public service commissioner.
Ernest T. Eaton of Billings, Republican for lieutenant governor, was re-elected over Paul Cannon, Democrat, and Floyd Jones, Socialist.
Sam W. Mitchell, Democrat, won over Howard K. Hazelbaker, Republican, for secretary of state by about 10,000 votes.
R. V. Bottomly, Democrat incumbent, defeated Stanley R. Foot, Republican, for attorney general.
George Porter, Republican for re-election, beat W. P. Pilgeram, Democrat, for state treasurer.
John J. Holmes, Democrat, defeated E. M. Mo, Republican, for state auditor with a two-to-one vote.
Elizabeth Ireland, Republican incumbent, was returned as superintendent of public schools. Her Democratic opponent was Violet M. Eastman.
