Our Little Champion Speller
Weren't you proud of Gloria?
The little spelling expert from Baltimore made quite a hit during
the four weeks that she appeared on the new TV sensation, "The
$64,000 Question."
Those who say that the younger generation is interested only in
be-bop, comic books and souped-up jalopies need only look at Gloria
Lockerman to get a different impression of today's youth. Smart,
bright, alert, with a personality that goes right through the television
set into the heart of the viewer.
A child of 12 who spends her spare time learning to spell diffi-
cult words thrilled millions of Americans who pulled with her. hold-
ing their breath lest she misplace a letter. When she didn't, they
breathed a sigh of relief as if Gloria were their own child on display
before the world.
Many are glad that Gloria's grandparents decided that she should
stop with $16,000 instead of going on for $64,000. Others thought that
she was such a good speller that she could have reached the bigger
figure.
Whether she should or should not have tried for the $64,000
question is not important. The significant thing is that Gloria gave
the nation's TV viewers a lift, boosted race relations and won for
herself many, many friends and the assurance of a college education.
