GENERAL SCOTT, AND THE BATTLE OF NIAGARA.

AGAIN the bloody fight's review'd,
And swells Niagara's thund'ring roar:
The foe returns, so late subdu'd,
And wake the battle-cry once more.
Our little band outnumbering far,
With veteran zeal, he joins the fray;
Whom heroes join'd in Spanish war,
To Yankee valor give the day.
Here Scott, another wreath hath won,
To bind a brow long laurell'd high,
Which, mantling o'er his honor'd wound,
Will flourish green forever there.
Another field supports his name,
Already borne by many a plain
And heights whence springs his earliest fame,
His later honors shall sustain.
Thou gallant chief! thy country's eyes,
Now deign to smile on soldiers brave,
And see a light in western skies,
Like that which gilds the ocean wave.
Would that our standard, fix'd by thee,
Again Niagara's walls could crown,
That Leonard's name, and infamy,
Might be immers'd in thy renown!
