Anecdote,--When the Duke of Orleans entered the King's chamber, some days prior to the revolution, the Comte d'Artois, who was present, shrunk back and insolently said, "Make way for the modern Cromwell."
"No Sir," replied the Duke, "had I possessed a tincture of Cromwell's disposition, I may venture to say, that your Highness would not have been here to insult the most faithful of your brother's subjects.--I glory in the name of citizen, and love my King" at the same time taking hold of the King's hand with fervour, and putting it to his heart, cast a look of indignant disdain at his abashed cousin.
