POLITICAL CORRESPONDENCE

Extract of a letter dated
Columbia, Lancaster co., Penn.
August 8, 1844.

The political skies are very bright throughout Pennsylvania for the glorious Whig party, and their no less glorious men. From every town and hamlet in the old Keystone, the glad shouts of the sanguine Whigs are to be heard, and an easy victory over our already prostrate foe is anticipated. Yet you can see by the active exertions everywhere making by the friends of Clay, Frelinghuysen, and Markle, that our anticipated victory will not be lost to us by our own supineness. It would do you good, I know, if you could be with us and witness the cordiality with which we all go to work, and the hearty good will with which we pull together for the chosen leaders of the vast Whig host. Locofocoism is dying away here like rotten sheep, and is withering before the heartily expressed indignation of the people like one of its own vile poke-weeds, when torn from its root and exposed to the beams of the sun. You know what good old Lancaster county has done heretofore, yet you can form no idea of what she is about to do this fall. We shall sweep every vestige of the foul Locofoco party from our glorious soil, and come out of the contest covered all over with victory. We can scarcely count the charges from Locofocoism to the Whigs any more, "so fast they follow," while there are none leaving us to join "the foul party." Harry Clay, Frelinghuysen, Markle, the Tariff as it is, Distribution, and National faith, are our watchwords, and under that banner we are achieving wonders. The Texan humbug, the forlorn hope of Polkism, the "new issue," which was to have blown us sky high, here, there, and everywhere, has only knocked the breath out of the carcass of Locofocoism, and injured no one but themselves. Why did the Locofocos interpolate this "new issue" into their creed? The party could not see as far as Mr. Van Buren, or they would have discovered what they now know, that this thieving disposition to become possessors of Texas while it is an integral portion of Mexico, would be scouted from the society of honest men of all parties, and the authors of the nefarious measure hooted and laughed at in our public places. Such is the case now, and no Locofocoism is going "down, derry down."

We had a glorious Convention on the 25th of July. Our glorious Whig ladies were out in all their loveliness, and their sweet smiles and gentle voices all were given to forward on the good Whig cause. The people came up in crowds to hear measures discussed, and to seal anew their allegiance to the country and the country's cause. Thousands met here on that day; and on the 5th day of September, if you feel inclined to see the vast host of the "Old Guard" marshalled again, come up to Lancaster city then. The people will be there in their might, with their songs, their banners, their music, and their unconquerable enthusiasm. It will be a gathering worthy of the cause, the occasion, and the MEN.

From all quarters, and more particularly from our immediate neighbor, York county, we hear cheering, most cheering news. Depend upon it, Locofocoism is dying away. Markle will be elected Governor--Clay and Frelinghuysen will carry the State, and Locofocoism may visit Salt river or Texas whenever it pleases. The "Keystone State" is as sound as a dollar.

We are just hearing the old North State speak. Let us give her a cheer anyhow--Hurrah!

Yours, &c.
