Another prop fallen out. The old dominion safe for reform and the welfare of the country.
Our returns of the elections are yet incomplete but are sufficient to show that Virginia is lost to Van Buren.
We have never calculated with any degree of confidence that Virginia would go for Harrison. But our apprehensions give way to irresistible and stubborn facts: and that she will not, in the time of trial, be unmindful of the principles of her most illustrious Washington, Jefferson, and Madison, the result of this election clearly shows. Virginia gives the Van Buren men another fair opportunity to console one another under their brightening prospects.
The returns, so far as received, for the House of delegates show 65 Whig and 46 Van Buren men,--twenty three members to be heard from. If they stand as last year, and if the returns received are correct, the parties in the House of Delegates will stand, Whig 75; Van Buren 59 There may be a Van Buren majority in the senate of 3. This state of parties will insure the election of two Whig U. S. Senators.
