3rd NEGRO
V.I. GOV.
Governor Walter A. Gordon, who took his oath of office here yesterday was the third Negro to be appointed to the governorship of the Virgin Islands.
William H. Hastie, who had earlier served as District Judge, was named to the post in 1946 by President Truman.
When Hastie was elevated to the 3rd Circuit Court of Appeals, Morris F. de Castro was appointed to succeed him.
Judge William Hastie
A.A. Alexander came the first Virgin Islander to get the post. But the Republicans sidestepped a native and chose Archie Alexander, an engineer in April 1954.
While Hastie moved out and up the ladder, Alexander left with greatly diminished prestige.
