Full Text
It appears that this terrible accident had been occasioned by the pipe of a stove which was fixed in the front store, and that part of the goods had been consumed before the alarm was given. By the spirited exertions of Capt. Waldron, the greatest part of the household furniture, clothes and books, were saved but the whole stock in trade was entirely consumed.
Mr. Starr's brother, who slept in an upper chamber, nearly perished in the flames, and was to all appearance dead when got out. Too much praise cannot be ascribed to the different magistrates of this city, for their extreme attention upon this melancholy occasion, and to the firemen and citizens, whose unremitting industry at last abated the violence of the flames; which, from the great progress they had made previous to their discovery, seemed to threaten a general conflagration.
The whole loss is estimated at upwards of five thousand pounds.
