Full Text

From the Connecticut Mirror.

This wolf, although not in sheep's clothing; stopped last Sunday evening, at Phelps's tavern, in Windsor, and, after calling for some punch and a supper, announced himself a minister of the gospel, and proposed to preach the next day; if notice could be given. The family not liking his appearance, very properly neglected to give notice. He spent the night, and after taking some bitters and his breakfast, departed, without the knowledge of any one and without paying for his entertainment.

Excepting his apparel, which was mean, his appearance was quite decent; and he is undoubtedly a man of some knowledge. He observed at Mr. Phelps's that he was Professor of Geology, Mineralogy, and Natural Philosophy, in the College of William and Mary, Virginia, with a salary of 3000 dollars per annum, although his duties were discharged in six months. He also said, that he received his collegiate education at New-Haven, about ten years since, and resided in the family of President Dwight; that he had a sister in that city, and was going to visit her; also that he was in the employ of a Medical society.

If on any wretch in society publick indignation ought to fall, it is on him, who, under the specious garb of religion, attempts to impose on his fellow-men. And, beyond all others, is he to be held in abhorrence, who, destitute of common honesty, offers himself, as a preacher of righteousness. It is hoped that this villain will soon be arrested in his career, and that he will receive, from the hand of justice, the punishment he deserves.
