Communications from Washington to the Editor of the United States Gazette.

FRIDAY, January 29.

It was yesterday reported that a very respectable gentleman in this city had received information from Erskine, that the revocation of the president's proclamation, interdicting our ports and waters to British armed vessels, was insisted upon by Mr. Rose, as a preliminary to negotiation. It turns out that this gentleman never heard such a thing till he was inquired of this morning, in relation to what he was supposed to have said on the subject. There is reason for believing that this story was wilfully fabricated by some honourable gentleman for mischievous purposes. If it be so, every honest man will sincerely hope the scoundrel may be discovered and exposed to merited infamy. It is not improbable that facts may correspond with the report, as to Mr. Rose's demanding the revocation of the proclamation. But to couple the report with the name of respectable gentleman, and by that means give it a sanction, is to the last degree infamous. As to the story of Mr. Rose's going home, which was industriously circulated yesterday, we have since heard no more of it.
