Silver District.

We have been shown a report to our Supervisors by a civil engineer as to the expense of improving the road now open to Castle Dome Landing, and of building a new one thence to Silver District, and regret that we cannot give it entire. This person estimates that $1,000 will be requisite to improve the road to Castle Dome so that teams of eight mules can pass, though adds, that it can also be done for $400.

The new road to Silver District, sixteen miles, would cost $4,000, for eight mule teams. For teams of four, the whole can be done for $3,000.

From others we learn that these figures are preposterous, and that the road can be built for much less money. Why should not the Board call for proposals and then judge whether advisable to accept any one of them. There is little or no need for an eight-mule-team-road at present, one for four will subserve all the interests of the District,-which are those of the County,-for several years to come, when it will be rich enough to improve it to a capacity for eight. The SENTINEL has heretofore expressed its views as to the duty of the County in this matter, and sees no reason to change or repeat them. We think it would be a good investment for the County and be remunerative from the development of the mines into taxable property.

Civil engineer's report estimates costs for road improvements to Castle Dome Landing ($400-$1,000 for eight-mule teams) and new road to Silver District (16 miles, $3,000-$4,000). Others dispute high figures; suggestion to solicit proposals for four-mule team road as sufficient and beneficial for county mining development.
