MEAN TREATMENT.

The Democrats really believe in kicking a man when he is down, which at best is considered a mighty mean operation, but what else would the Democrats practice. The forbearance heretofore practiced by some of the Democrats towards Vallandigham has, it appears, ceased to be a virtue, and so some of the leading ones are slashing at him right and left. The last castigation he has received is from Marble of the N. Y. World, and he displays considerable venom towards the valiant Clement. The disastrous defeat of the Democratic candidate for Congress in the 8th District of Ohio is where the shoe pinches. Most of his Democratic enemies claim he has no influence in the party, and that he is an incubus and a dead weight, but in the same breath they attribute the defeat of their candidate Burns to him, in which they are about as consistent as they are in most things.

The fact is Vallandigham is a democrat of influence, and they know it, and so long as he obeys the behests of the party it is all right, but as soon as he demands some of the small crumbs which are falling from the democratic table, he is thrust aside to make room for some one whom they suppose is not quite so obnoxious to the people, although entertaining the same sentiments, but in a milder form-- that is to say without the same ability. The spunk that Vallandigham is showing in kicking the traces, is "gorgeous for to see," and we hope the fun may continue until, at least, after the next presidential election. One thing is certain, Vallandigham's restlessness, and his disaffection extending as it does to his followers, settles the hash for the democrats in Ohio next fall. Since the late election in the Eighth District, they have, we believe, about given the thing up. Even Pendleton and the greenback scheme can't save them.
