A man from the southward came in last evening (known as a person of character by the Honourable Mr. Jenifer) who lives near Charleston, South Carolina, says, the royal army, 5000 in number, with 3000 Tories included, attacked the town, were repulsed, returned to the charge, and got so near as to bayonet with the garrison; when in the time of need, General Lincoln providentially arrived, and falling on their rear, entirely defeated the assailants; they broke, and fled in small parties, leaving 1400 behind them. The Tories declined aiding in the assault made by the British forces.
