Yesterday three young men, Messrs. Patten and Dale, of New York, and Jennys, of Portsmouth, N. H. took a boat from the shore in Boothbay, for the purpose of sailing for pleasure. After passing the entrance of the harbor, an increase of wind compelled them to put about for the shore. Shortly after, Mr. Jennys, in attempting to pass aft, unfortunately slipped upon the seat, and was precipitated into the river. The other two, after several fruitless attempts to rescue their friend, after much difficulty, reached the shore.
At the time this disaster took place, the two in the boat hoisted a signal of distress to a schooner which was a short distance off, which passed near the place where he fell overboard and there hove to. Some slight hopes are entertained that she picked him up.—Mr. Jennys expressed some concern about the papers and bills which he had about him—which, he said, amounted to a large sum.
